EDUCATION CHANGES LIVES
and we strive to provide the resources that will bring real-world, collaborative musical experiences into the hands and classrooms of students. This is why every year we offer hands-on educational opportunities for secondary and university students of ALL ages across the country (and soon for the first time, out of the country!). In Chicago, we have collaborated with universities and high schools that span the breadth of the city, bringing ~Nois directly into classrooms. Specifically for high-schoolers, we offer a Young Creators Fellowship which provides mentorship and collaboration with the ensemble for a premiere of their new work as part of our DISCOVERY concert programming. In partnership with this program, in the 2024-2025 season we provided free educational programming for over 500 students ages 4-18 in the Chicago-land area. Throughout our regular concert season we strive to encourage young artists to CREATE - whether it be through new works, new ideas, or simply new questions surrounding music.
RESIDENCY ACTIVITIES
MASTERCLASSES
~Nois will listen to solo and/or small ensemble performances and offer comments and suggestions. Groups of any instrumentation playing music from any time period are welcome.
OPEN REHEARSAL
~Nois will lead auditors through a public rehearsal of the ensemble’s current repertoire. Questions from the audience will be addressed during the rehearsal.
LECTURE AND DEMONSTRATION
~Nois will perform pieces or excerpts of pieces from our repertoire, then discuss and analyze the music, compositional techniques, and compositional collaborations (when acceptable). Questions to and from the audience will be addressed throughout the demonstration.
DISCUSSION SESSION FOR PERFORMERS
~Nois will discuss building a career in chamber music. Topics can include the formation and development of chamber music groups, how to communicate effectively within a chamber ensemble, choosing repertoire, and career development.
DISCUSSION SESSION FOR COMPOSERS
~Nois will discuss approaches to writing for the saxophone. Topics covered include extended techniques, score study of existing works, and technical limitations. Composers are encouraged to bring scores to discuss.
INTRODUCTORY IMPROVISATION SESSION
~Nois will lead students in basic experimental improvisation exercises. Students with little to no experience improvising will gain a basic comfortability with producing non-notated sounds through group improvisation.
